Ram Mount iPhone A-Pillar Mod

Let me begin by giving credit to the original author. I found the Ram Mount iPhone mod on Tacoma World here.  G.T. from TacomaWorld is the original poster from what I can tell, all credit goes to G.T.

This is an incredibly simple mod and I was determined to make it happen. Especially so because this mod solves one of my major concerns with my daily commute. I am a Waze user. I love the ability to point out the locations of accidents, potholes and well…um…speed traps as well. I’m just trying to help out my fellow commuters. Ever notice that NO ONE ever flashes their high beams anymore. Anyway…

Ram Mount iPhone A Pillar Mod

The Ram Mount iPhone mod is the perfect mod for 2nd generation Tacomas owners to mount their iPhones to the A pillar. The A pillar has a well placed grab handle that can be modified to accept a 1″ ball base. The picture below links to the exact listing on Amazon.

Hardware Needed to Mount the Ball Base

In order to mount the ball base you will need to buy some very specific hardware.

  1. One M6 x 1.00 x 50 MM Socket Cap Screw (stainless steel)
  2. One 6 MM Split Washer
  3. Two 6 MM Nuts

I went to HomeDepot, Lowes and Wal-Mart and could not find the hardware listed below. It wasn’t until I headed to my local ACE Hardware that I found exactly what I needed. The total cost for the hardware was $4.00 USD.

The Other Main Ram Mount iPhone Components

You will also need the following Ram Mount items

  2. Ram Mount Cradle Holder for Universal X-Grip Cellphone/iPhone with 1-Inch Ball – Non-Retail Packaging – Black

The Installation Process

Here are the tools required for the modification.

  1. Flat head screwdriver
  2. 10 MM socket & ratchet
  3. Metric Allen Wrench set, with 5 MM

I used the flat head screwdriver to remove the cap covering the bolt on the bottom of the handle. I tried using a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the bolt but stripped the head on the bolt. So, I used the 10 MM socket to finish removing the bolt from the bottom of the handle.

At this point you should assemble the Ram Mount 1″ ball base.  Here is the order to assemble the base.

  1. Insert the M6 bolt into the 1″ ball base
  2. Thread one of the 6 MM nuts and snug it up to the base
  3. Place the 6 MM split washer
  4. Thread the other 6 MM nut and snug it altogether

It will look exactly like the picture below.

Now, place the ball base into the handle, press firmly and start threading the bolt. Once the bolt catches, start using the 5 MM Allen wrench to tighten everything down. Your finished base install will look like the picture below.

Finalize the Installation

From here, the rest of the installation is very easy. Just attach the short arm to the 1″ ball base and attach the X-Grip to the short arm. Se the picture below for what the final setup will look like. You also have two orientation options.

  1. The first option is Portrait
  2. The second option is Landscape

  1. That’s a cool hack! My 1999 4Runner has the a-pillar grab handle. Wonder if it would work for that.

    1. Thanks! Check on the forums and see if someone knows the size of the bolt on your ’99. The 1″ ball mount will fit up to M8. The packaging actually comes with M8 bolts.
